Local Fishing in KnockandoThe River Spey is renowned as one of the best salmon and sea trout rivers in the world and fishermen from every corner come year after year to test themselves against the ‘king of fish’ in what is recognised as some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland.

Cardhu Country House is perfectly situated in the heart of Knockando Estate which houses some of the best beats in the area. It has three and a half miles of superb double bank fishing, comprising of three connecting beats, incorporating 26 main pools, can take up to 11 rods and can be fished from the bank, the boat or by wading. Each beat has its own fishing hut, toilet facilities and is permanently manned by its own ghillie, some of whom are internationally recognisable.

Fishing on the SpeyWe are also centrally located for easy access to neighbouring beats of the Spey at Craigellachie, Wester Elchies and Ballindalloch as well as on two of its tributaries the Livet and the Avon on which The Ballindalloch Estate has 6 miles of superb salmon and sea trout fishing. Day and weekly tickets are available from local establishments, and arrangements for ghillies can be made either through ourselves or directly with the estates.

Fishing Season:

Salmon 12th February --- 30th September
Trout 15th March --- 30th September


Sea Fishing on chartered boats departing from some of the many small ports dotted along the Moray Coast is also available. Keen angler or just out for a casual day, it is possible to catch an array of sea fish including mackerel, pollock cod and ling as well as flat fish

The Glen of Rothes Fishery (only 15mins away) offers superb Stillwater fishing on its well stocked 6 acre site rainbow trout, browns, blue rainbows and brook trout. A separate loch is set aside for coarse fishing and is stocked with bream, carp, and tench.
All equipment and lessons in fly-casting are available on site if required.

To the south west of Cardhu Country House is the Glenlivet Estate on which the Lochy Trout Fishery offers high quality rainbow and and brown trout at various weights. It is open 7 days a week from April to October and tuition and rod hire are available by arrangement.



Throughout the various seasons there are excellent opportunities for all types shooting and should you wish. This can be arranged by ourselves with the various local estates with whom we have very good relations. Depending on your preferences we can arrange walked up and driven shoots for pheasants, partridge, grouse as well as bagging the occasional pigeon, woodcock, snipe, rabbit and hare.

On Knockando Estate, Walked up Shoots for groups of four or five guns or Driven Pheasant Shoots for groups of 6 to 8 guns, (between November and January) can be arranged under the supervision of the Estates Head Gamekeeper Willie Smith.

On neighbouring Ballindalloch Estate between 15 and 20 days per year are set aside for driven pheasant and partridge shoots as well as walk up days for up to four guns. Tailored packages of shooting, fishing, and golf can be arranged and we at Cardhu Country House would be happy to help organise these packages to suit.

Partridge 01st September --- 01st February
Pheasant 01st October --- 01st February

Stalking for Roe and Red Deer can also be arranged with the local estates and walked up grouse shoots can also be accommodated by arrangement on the nearby spectacular Inveravon Estate. Stalking for fishers can also be included in their overall package on Knockando Estate.

Red Deer Stags July 01st ---- October 20th
Hinds October 21st ---- February 15th

Roe Deer Bucks April 1st ---- October 20th
Hinds October 21st ---- March 31st

For those who wish to learn more about deer and the art of stalking, then the nearby Stalking School based near Aberlour is the best place to learn as it offers 1 and 2 day courses at competitive rates.

Clay Pigeon Shooting is available within a 5 minute drive of the front door being located on the Knockando Estate. This and many other activities such as archery, target shooting, 4 x 4 and argo driving, canoeing, rafting and mountain biking are organised by Sporting Scotland renowned for its corporate and team building expertise. It is based locally, thus making Cardhu County House the perfect location for easy access to their activities.
